Title

Medieval Portable Pie Oven 1465-1475

Subject

This illustration shows a medieval portable oven, something that was fairly common in medieval Europe at the time. Due to breads short shelf life at the time, bakers had to travel in order to deliver the freshest bread to people of importance. They were essentially the ice cream truck of the medieval world, in that they would be able to fully contain the means for delivering fresh bread to the masses, albeit a little more discombobulated than an ice cream truck.

Description

This picture illustrates a portable pie oven, in bright colors and a fair amount of medieval flair. The oven is round and wood fired and is being transported on wheels, while being dragged by two men, with two others throwing bread in and out of the fire. There is a pile of fresh pies in front of the oven with a magical rack of pretzels floating in the air behind them. This illustration is one of many that show medieval bakers and baking styles, but being unique in that it is a transportable baking system. This also potentially shows a small guild of bakers, as many bakers at the time were encompassed in the guild system, and had to go through an apprenticeship before being considered a master baker. These guilds were very important when it came to artisanal goods in medieval times, and were the producers of everything from bread to art to metallurgical goods.
