Description

Coca Cola was initially created to be a substitute for alcohol in the late 19th century by former Confederate officer, John Styth Pemberton. The soft drink is known for infamously containing small amounts of cocaine in its formula before 1903 by the usage of coca leaves that still contained the drug. The company eventually moved onto using more processed coca leaves that no longer contained cocaine before the drink became one of the most internationally known soft drinks of all time. The significance of the initial formula, however, is the history behind the coca leaf in pre-Columbian South America.
Coca leaves were mostly concentrated and cultivated in in northern Peru, Columbia, Argentina, Bolivia, and many other South American countries over two thousand years ago for various purposes. Coca was used for bartering, offerings, medicine, and cultural traditions involving burying coca cigarettes and candies for spiritual festivities. This culture surrounding coca was mostly seen in the tribes along the Andes mountains, and did not arrive in colonial and European circulation until the first Spanish explorers encountered the inhabitants of the Andes for the first time. Among the South American colonies, coca leaves were used for bartering for some time until the Catholic Church began a movement to purge the leaf from existence by the 16th century, fearing the spirituality connected to the leaves would undermine their efforts to Christianize the colonies. This failed, and eventually the then monarch of Spain, King Phillip II imposed a sales tax on it.
